Rockets

OPENING QUESTION: What are three substantial dangers in launching humans into space?

LEARNING GOAL FOR TODAY: I will be able to identify three launch vehicles for launching human beings into space during today's class.

WORDS O' THE DAY:

  • Force ("A push or a pull")

Newton's 1st Law: An object will continue doing whatever it is doing unless/until it is acted on by an unbalanced force.

    Newton's 2nd Law: Force = (mass) x (acceleration)

Newton's 3rd Law: "For every force exerted by one object there is an equal and opposite force exerted by a second object." or more basically "forces always occur in pairs"

WORK O' THE DAY:

Let's take another (better) look at the Apollo 11 launch vehicle-- better known as the truly awesome Saturn V Rocket:

Let's take a few moments to review these fuel specs: Work with your group to identify JUST those parts of the rocket that carried fuel.

Just for fun (?) ALSO work with your group to identify the type of fuel carried in each stage of the Saturn V rocket!

The Space Launch System was "planned" to launch by NASA in 2017. Do a quick search and find the current planned launch date

The cost for putting just 1 pound of material in orbit: ~ $25,000 per pound(apparently early estimates had projected costs as low as a few hundred dollars per pound!)

What problems were associated with the Saturn V?

What problems were associated with the Space Shuttle?

How are companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin working to avoid those?

What is a "heavy" or "Super Heavy" rocket? Why do we care?

Blue/Green dots: Research the "heavy" rocket being designed by Blue Origin?

Red/Orange dots: Research the "heavy" rocket(s) being designed by SpaceX?
